Aluminium Bifold Doors: Open Your Home to the Garden
Nothing changes a house like a set of bifolds. Fold them back on a summer evening and the kitchen becomes part of the garden. Close them on a January morning and slim, thermally broken aluminium frames keep the room warm and the view intact.

The door that changes how you use the house
Slimmer frames, more glass
Aluminium is far stronger than uPVC, so the frames can be much slimmer than a uPVC bifold.
Big panels, no sag
Aluminium bifolds carry large, heavy, triple-glazed panels for decades without dropping or sticking.
Any colour, forever
Powder-coated in any RAL shade, with dual colour inside and out, and a finish that doesn’t fade or need repainting.

Thermally broken
A polyamide break inside the profile stops cold bridging, so modern aluminium bifolds meet and beat building regulations.
Secure by design
Multi-point locking, shootbolts top and bottom of every panel, PAS 24 tested, Secured by Design options.

The systems we fit
Sheerline Prestige bifold: Sheerline’s premium bifold, designed and made in the UK. Slim, equal sightlines across every panel, so the door looks balanced even when closed, with Thermlock® multi-chamber insulation, a choice of traffic-door configurations and a low-threshold option. Matches Sheerline windows and the S1 roof lantern exactly, so a whole extension coordinates.
Cortizo bifold and Bi-fold Plus: one of Europe’s largest aluminium system houses, and the bifold most widely specified by UK architects. Cortizo bifolds are known for particularly slim sightlines where the panels meet. Panels up to 1.2m wide and 3m tall. Matches Cortizo Cor Vision sliding doors and windows.
Not sure which? We have a bifold on display in both showrooms so you can open it, close it and feel the running gear, and the team will talk you through the differences between the two systems.
Configurations
- 2 to 7 panels: from a narrow opening to a full-width garden wall
- Fold left, right, or split: panels can stack to one side or both
- Traffic door: a single panel that opens like a normal door, so you don’t have to fold the whole set to nip into the garden
- Open in or open out: outward-opening is most common and keeps the panels out of the room
- Thresholds: standard weathered or low
- Integrated blinds: blinds sealed inside the double-glazed unit (double glazing only)
- Any shape: shaped and angled heads for gable-end openings

Glazing options
A-rated, toughened double glazing comes as standard. Add any of these to suit your garden and the way you use the room.
Double glazing
A-rated, argon filled, low-E and toughened
Triple glazing
For exposed or north-facing sites
Solar control glass
Cuts summer heat gain on south- and west-facing gardens
Acoustic glazing
Laminated acoustic glass for main roads and railway lines
Self-cleaning glass
Worth having on large panels
Integrated blinds
Double glazed units only

Aluminium bifold door cost in Scotland
Aluminium bifolds are priced per leaf and start from £1,045 per leaf, fully fitted, including VAT. So a three-leaf set starts from around £3,135 and a five-leaf set from around £5,225, before glazing upgrades and colour. Aluminium costs more than uPVC, but the slimmer frames, longer life and colour options are why most customers choose it. Cortizo is typically the more affordable of the two systems; Sheerline Prestige sits at the premium end.

Bifold or sliding?
Bifolds open the whole wall; sliders give bigger panes with fewer frames but only open half the width. If you want the widest possible opening, choose bifolds. If you want the biggest uninterrupted view when closed, see our patio and sliding doors →. Many customers pair bifolds on the garden wall with a lantern overhead, see roof lanterns →.
One system, one look
We don’t mix systems on a project. Sheerline windows, doors, bifolds, patio doors and the S1 roof lantern share one profile family and one colour run; Cortizo windows, bifolds and sliders share another. Choose one brand for the whole extension and every frame matches edge to edge, no discrepancies in shape, sightline or shade. Handles and hardware are matched too, from the ERA and Fab&Fix ranges we fit across every product.

Stirling showroom →Your questions answered
Sheerline or Cortizo, which is better?
Both are excellent. Sheerline is UK-made with perfectly equal sightlines and the tightest match to Sheerline windows and lanterns. Cortizo has very slim junctions and is the more widely specified system. Come and operate the bifold in the showroom and the team will walk you through which system suits your project.
Are aluminium bifolds cold?
No. Thermally broken profiles and A-rated glazing mean modern aluminium bifolds are as warm as uPVC and considerably warmer than the sliding patio doors they often replace.
How wide can bifolds go?
Up to seven panels, so around 7–8 metres, depending on the system. Beyond that, we’d usually suggest two sets or a combination of bifolds and fixed glazing.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not for replacing an existing door or as part of a permitted-development extension. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas differ. A building warrant is needed if you’re creating a new opening.
Can the frames match my windows and roof lantern?
Yes. Both systems come in any RAL colour, and Sheerline bifolds match Sheerline windows and the S1 lantern exactly.
Do you fit bifolds outside Glasgow and Stirling?
Yes, across Scotland including Falkirk, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and Perthshire.
