Aluminium Roof Lanterns: Supplied & Fitted Across Scotland
A roof lantern does something no window can. It brings light down into the middle of a room, the kitchen island, the dining table, the part of an extension that’s furthest from the garden doors. On a grey Scottish day, that’s the difference between a room you switch the lights on in and one you don’t.
We supply and fit the Sheerline S1 roof lantern: one of the most secure aluminium lanterns available, with ultra-slim sightlines, and thermally efficient enough to keep an extension warm through a Stirlingshire winter. Fitted by our own team across Glasgow, Stirling and Scotland.
Light where no window can reach
Light where you need it
A lantern floods the centre of a room with daylight, far more effectively than adding another window at the edge.
Makes a room feel bigger
The extra height and the view of the sky make even a modest extension feel generous.
The finishing touch for an extension
Most single-storey rear extensions have a flat roof. A lantern turns that flat roof into the best feature of the room.

Warm, not draughty
Modern aluminium lanterns are thermally broken and double glazed. The old image of a leaky, cold glass roof doesn’t apply.
Secure by design
The Sheerline S1 was built from the ground up with security in mind, and carries Secured by Design accreditation, rare for a roof lantern.

The Sheerline S1 roof lantern
We chose Sheerline because the S1 is one of the best-engineered lanterns available. What sets it apart:
- Ultra-low-line design: the top caps sit low over the glass, so the lantern looks sleek from outside and from below
- Slim sightlines: less frame, more sky
- Thermlock® multi-chamber insulation: Sheerline’s patented thermal technology keeps heat in; the S1 achieves a very low U-value for a glazed roof
- Large spans without tie bars: large clear spans, so no bar cutting across your view
- 10 styles: from compact square “pyramid” lanterns to long rectangular designs, in a wide range of sizes
- Secured by Design: anti-tamper screws, enclosed glazing and a high-security ridge end
- Any RAL colour: powder-coated in-house, with dual colour inside and out available
- Opening vents: optional, flush with the rafter bars so they don’t spoil the lines

Glazing options
Every roof lantern has a laminated inner pane for overhead safety. Choose the rest of the glass to suit which way the roof faces and how you use the room.
Toughened and laminated
Laminated inner pane as standard for overhead safety
Solar control glass
Reduces heat gain in summer and glare on bright days; recommended for south- and west-facing roofs
Self-cleaning glass
A coating that breaks down dirt so rain washes it away; worth having on a roof you can’t easily reach
Acoustic glazing
Laminated acoustic glass to soften rain noise and reduce sound from flight paths
Tinted and low-iron options
Neutral, blue or bronze tints; low-iron for the clearest possible glass

Where roof lanterns work best
- Kitchen extensions: over the island or dining area
- Open-plan living spaces: to light the middle of a deep room
- Flat-roofed extensions on tenements and terraces: where side windows aren’t possible
- Loft and dormer conversions: over a stairwell or landing
Roof lantern cost in Scotland
Every roof lantern is bespoke, made to your opening in your choice of style, glazing and colour, so we don’t publish a starting price. A small square lantern is the most affordable; a large rectangular lantern with solar-control glass and opening vents is the top end. Get in touch with your rough sizes and we’ll give you a guide figure quickly.
If you’re planning an extension, the most cost-effective route is to have the lantern designed in from the start, we’re happy to work with your builder or architect on the kerb and opening size.
We give you one fair, fixed price after a free survey. No countdown discounts, no pressure.

Working with your builder
A roof lantern needs a properly built, insulated upstand (kerb) to sit on. We’ll give your builder the exact kerb dimensions, and we can fit at whatever stage suits the build.
One system, one look
We don’t mix systems on a project. Sheerline windows, doors, bifolds, patio doors and the S1 roof lantern share one profile family and one colour run; Cortizo windows, bifolds and sliders share another. Choose one brand for the whole extension and every frame matches edge to edge, no discrepancies in shape, sightline or shade. Handles and hardware are matched too, from the ERA and Fab&Fix ranges we fit across every product.
See a roof lantern in person
Our Glasgow showroom has a large roof lantern on display, so you can stand underneath it, see the slim profiles and low-line caps from below, and get a feel for the amount of light one brings into a room.
Stirling doesn’t have a lantern on display, but the team can show you Sheerline profiles, glass and colour samples and talk through your extension.

Stirling showroom →Your questions answered
Does a roof lantern need planning permission?
Usually not, as it falls under permitted development for most houses, but flats, listed buildings and conservation areas are different. A building warrant is normally needed for the extension itself. We’ll advise.
Will a roof lantern make the room too hot in summer?
Not with the right glass. Solar-control glazing cuts heat gain substantially, and opening vents let warm air escape. For south-facing roofs we’d recommend both.
Is a roof lantern noisy in the rain?
All glass roofs make some sound in heavy rain. Acoustic laminated glass reduces it noticeably.
How is it cleaned?
Self-cleaning glass handles the outside. The inside is reached with an extending pole, or ask us about lanterns sized so the glass can be reached from a stepladder.
Can I match the lantern colour to my bifold doors?
Yes. Sheerline lanterns and Sheerline or Cortizo bifolds are available in matching RAL colours, so the whole extension coordinates.
Do you fit roof lanterns outside Glasgow and Stirling?
Yes, across Scotland including Falkirk, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and Perthshire.
