From the Steeple to the suburbs
Falkirk’s historic town centre, with the 1814 Steeple on the High Street, has been a conservation area since 1971. Just to the west, Arnothill has large late Victorian villas in blond sandstone with slate roofs and timber sash and case windows. Beyond them, Camelon, Bainsford, Grahamston, Laurieston and Hallglen are mostly family houses that suit a straightforward, efficient upgrade.
What Falkirk homes usually need
Most Falkirk homes outside the conservation areas are ideal for new uPVC windows and a composite door: quick to fit, warmer straight away and low maintenance for years. In Arnothill and around Dollar Park, sash-style windows keep the villas’ character, and the council’s rules need checking first.
We quote the whole house in one visit, so windows, doors and colours all match.
- Family homes across the town: uPVC windows in white, grey or woodgrain.
- Arnothill and Dollar Park villas: sash-style windows, subject to conservation rules.
- Front doors: a composite door with high-security locking.
- Garden doors: bifold or patio doors.

Falkirk Council has nine conservation areas. In the town itself these are Falkirk Town Centre (first designated in 1971) and Arnothill and Dollar Park. The council’s management plan for Arnothill and Dollar Park says window, door and roof replacements need planning permission, although an exact like-for-like replacement of an original feature may not.
That plan predates the 2024 national changes for windows, so check with the council. Since May 2024:
- Rear windows, and side windows that don’t face a road, have no design conditions.
- On the front, or a side facing a road, you need the council’s prior approval if the new windows look different: a different opening method, pane layout, or frame or astragal colour or size.
- Listed buildings still need listed building consent.
- The 2024 rule covers windows only. For a new front door in a conservation area, check with the council before ordering.
