Bay & Bow Windows: Replaced Properly, Fitted by Our Own Team

Half the houses in Glasgow and Stirling have one. The bay window is the defining feature of the 1930s semi, the Victorian villa and the tenement front room, and replacing it is the job most window companies get wrong.

A bay isn’t three windows bolted together. It carries the roof above it, it needs the right bay poles and jacks, and the angles have to be exact. Our own surveyors measure every bay and our own installers fit it, and every bay comes with a welded cill for a clean, continuous line along the bottom of the window.

Bay or bow?

Three shapes, all replaced properly

▤

Bay window

Three or more windows set at angles (usually 90°, 135° or 150°) projecting from the wall, with a flat centre pane. The classic Scottish front-room window.

◠

Bow window

Four, five or six windows set at gentler angles forming a smooth curve. Less common in Scotland but a striking upgrade for a wide, flat opening.

▦

Box bay

A squared-off bay with 90° returns, often on tenements and Edwardian villas.

New bays

We can convert a flat window into a bay or bow where the structure allows.

Choose your window style

A bay is built from whichever window style suits the house:

  • Casement bays: the most common; see casement windows
  • Flush sash bays: the timber look for period homes; see flush sash windows
  • Sliding sash bays: for Victorian and Edwardian villas and tenements with original sash bays; see sash and case windows
  • Tilt and turn bays: for upper floors that need cleaning from inside
  • Aluminium bays: slim frames and maximum glass for contemporary homes; see aluminium windows

Mix fixed and opening lights however you like. Opening side lights with a fixed centre is the usual arrangement.

What separates a good bay replacement from a bad one

Load-bearing bays. Many bays support the roof or the wall above. We use reinforced bay poles and adjustable bay jacks, sized for the load, so the bay carries the weight exactly as the original did. Where we’re not sure, we check before quoting, not on the day.

Angles and corner posts. Measured precisely and manufactured to match, with variable-angle bay poles for non-standard bays.

Bay roofs. We can replace or re-cover the small roof over the bay, and insulate it. It’s often the biggest single source of heat loss in a bay-fronted room.

Welded cill. Every bay we fit comes with a full welded cill, so there are no joins along the bottom of the bay, just one continuous line. External trims, internal boards and plasterwork are made good by our team.

Any shape. Arched-head bays, gable bays and curved-head sashes are all made to measure.

Colours, glazing and options

  • Colours: white, cream, Chartwell green, anthracite, black and woodgrain foils; dual colour inside and out
  • Glazing: A-rated double glazing as standard; triple glazing; acoustic glazing for main-road bays; obscure glass; safety glass where required
  • Integrated blinds: sealed inside the double-glazed unit, ideal for a bay where fitting blinds is awkward (double glazing only)
  • Georgian and astragal bars to match the original pattern
  • Cill options: 85mm stub, 150mm standard or 225mm large, all welded on bays for one continuous line
  • Trickle vents: optional, recommended

What does a replacement bay window cost in Scotland?

A bay costs more than the sum of its windows because of the poles, jacks, roof work and the extra survey and fitting time. Price depends on the size and number of panes, the window style, colour, glazing and whether the bay roof needs work.

FAQs

Your questions answered

Does my bay window support the roof?

Often, yes, especially on 1930s semis and Victorian villas. Our surveyor will check and specify reinforced poles and jacks if needed. Never let anyone replace a bay without confirming this first.

Can you replace just one window in the bay?

We can, but the new window won’t match the old ones in colour or profile. Most customers replace the whole bay at once.

Can I change the style, casement to sash, for example?

Yes, provided the angles and structure allow. A flush sash or sliding sash bay is a popular upgrade on period homes.

Do you replace the bay roof?

Yes, we can replace, re-cover and insulate the small roof above the bay.

How long does a bay replacement take?

Usually a day for a standard three-pane bay, longer if the roof is being replaced.

Why do windows get condensation, and will new windows stop it?

Condensation forms when warm, moist indoor air meets a cold surface. New A-rated windows are much warmer on the inside so it drops dramatically, but because they’re also far more airtight, moisture that used to leak out now stays in the house. Ventilation fixes it: trickle vents, extractor fans and airing rooms briefly each day. Condensation on the outside of new glass on a cold morning is a good sign; between the panes means a failed sealed unit, which is covered by guarantee.

Do you fit bay windows outside Glasgow and Stirling?

Yes, across Scotland including Falkirk, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and Perthshire.
