Victorian villas to new-build estates

Cambuslang’s homes range from 19th-century mansions, villas and tenements around Main Street and Kirkhill to modern flats and detached houses at Newton and Halfway. Between Cambuslang Park, Dechmont Hill and the Clyde, that mix means no single window suits every street, so we survey each home before recommending anything.

What Cambuslang homes usually need

Older villas and tenements near Main Street and Kirkhill suit sash-style or flush sash windows that keep their character. Newer homes at Newton, Halfway and Flemington are a straightforward upgrade: efficient uPVC windows, a composite front door and often bifold or patio doors onto the garden.

If your home is older, we’ll check the conservation area map with you before you order.

  • Sandstone villas: flush sash or sash-style windows in a heritage colour.
  • Tenement flats: sash-style or tilt and turn windows.
  • Modern family homes: uPVC windows in white or anthracite, with a matching door.
  • Garden extensions: bifold or sliding patio doors.

Conservation areas in Cambuslang

South Lanarkshire Council has designated a Cambuslang Conservation Area and a separate Farme Cross conservation area. If your home is older and near the town centre, check the council’s conservation area map before changing windows or doors.

Scottish rules for windows in conservation areas changed in May 2024:

  • Rear windows, and side windows that don’t face a road, have no design conditions.
  • On the front, or a side facing a road, you need the council’s prior approval if the new windows look different: a different opening method, pane layout, or frame or astragal colour or size.
  • Listed buildings still need listed building consent.
  • The 2024 rule covers windows only. For a new front or close door in a conservation area, check with the council before ordering.
